Your First Week With a New Dachshund

A practical checklist for sleep, potty training, meals, and bonding without overwhelming your puppy.

The first week is about safety, rest, and relationship — not perfection. Your Dachshund is learning a brand-new world, so short training sessions and predictable rhythms work better than packed schedules.

Keep meals on the go-home schedule at first. Take potty breaks often, especially after naps and play. Use a crate or playpen for supervised downtime so your puppy can decompress.

Watch for tiredness signals and protect that long back by limiting repeated jumps from couches or beds. Carry your puppy on stairs while they are young.

Most of all, enjoy the snuggles. Bonding moments in week one set the tone for years of trust with your little shadow.
